UE oferă Ucrainei peste cinci milioane de pastile antiradiații, în contextul în care cresc temerile privind un accident la cea mai mare centrală nucleară din Europa.
Centrala din Zaporojie se află sub ocupație rusă și este frecvent ținta unor atacuri, ambele părți acuzându-se reciproc. În unele zone, oficialii distribuie deja pastilele care pot împiedica organismul să absoarbă iodul radioactiv. Locuitorilor li s-a spus să le ia doar dacă se confirmă o scurgere de radiații.
Până în prezent, doar persoanelor care locuiesc pe o rază de 50 km de centrala electrică li se oferă pastilele cu iodură de potasiu, însă Uniunea Europeană pune la dispoziția Ucrainei peste cinci milioane de doze, ceea ce ar permite o distribuție mult mai largă.
Zaporojie, în sudul Ucrainei, a fost ocupată de Rusia la scurt timp după ce aceasta a invadat Ucraina în februarie. Angajații ucraineni care continuă să opereze centrala au declarat pentru BBC că trupele rusești au folosit-o ca bază militară și că lucrătorii sunt ținuți efectiv sub amenințarea armelor.

Deși luptele recente din zonă au provocat unele daune centralei, până în prezent nu s-a înregistrat nicio creștere a nivelului de radiații în zonă. Cu toate acestea, oficialii sunt îngrijorați de faptul că daunele suplimentare ar putea cauza o scurgere de radiații, care s-ar putea răspândi pe o suprafață mare.
Agenția nucleară a ONU a cerut acces la instalație, iar o echipă a sosit în Ucraina în speranța de a i se permite, în sfârșit, să inspecteze situl în zilele următoare.
„În cazul unei situații de urgență, atât adulții, cât și copiii vor fi deja aprovizionați cu iodură și vor putea să se protejeze la timp”, a declarat Anatoliy Kurtyev de la consiliul municipal din Zaporojie.
El a subliniat că locuitorii ar trebui să ia medicamentul doar dacă se întâmplă un accident – nu ca măsură de precauție. Iodura de potasiu se ia pentru a preveni ca iodul radioactiv, principalul izotop cancerigen cunoscut și sub numele de iod-131, să fie absorbit de glanda tiroidă. Nivelurile ridicate de iod radioactiv pot crește riscul de cancer tiroidian la sugari, copii și tineri, chiar și la ani de zile după expunere.
Dacă este administrată la momentul potrivit și în doza potrivită, iodura de potasiu va fi absorbită de glanda tiroidă în locul iodului-131, mai periculos, reducând riscurile asociate pentru sănătate.
