”Îi datorăm mult lui Mihail Gorbaciov. El a schimbat istoria ţării noastre şi a milioane de oameni’, a declarat preşedinta Bundestag-ului, Bärbel Bas, în discursul său.
Dacă în Rusia moştenirea sa este controversată, în Germania fostul lider sovietic suscită admiraţie şi respect pentru faptul că a pregătit terenul către reunificarea ţării – realizată la 3 octombrie 1990, la doar un an de la căderea Zidului Berlinului.
Politicieni din toate partidele şi-au exprimat recunoştinţa, lansând apeluri ca o stradă sau o piaţă din Berlin să poarte numele lui Gorbaciov. Fostul cancelar Angela Merkel (2005-2021), crescută în fosta Germanie de Est, a declarat că Gorbaciov ”i-a schimbat viaţa în mod fundamental”.
Sâmbătă, în ziua funeraliilor lui Gorbaciov la Moscova, în capitala germană drapelele au fost coborâte în bernă în semn de omagiu.
Mihail Gorbaciov a decedat la spital, pe 31 august, la vârsta de 91 ani.
