Președintele Klaus Iohannis, a afirmat, astăzi, că nu vizează o funcție la conducerea UE, obiectivul său fiind exclusiv șefia NATO. Chestionat cu privire la acest aspect, Iohannis a răspuns că ”mă concentrez pe discuțiile pentru NATO”.
Precizările au loc după ce s-a spus că președintele român ar urmări să obțină, de fapt, funcția de șef al diplomației europene, post ocupat acum de Josep Borrell sau chiar pe cea de președinte al Comisiei Europene. Cea de-a doua variantă, avansată de Europa Liberă, ar interveni în cazul în care Ursula von der Leyen, candidatul PPE, nu ar întruni voturile pentru desemnare.
Referitor la candidatura la NATO, șeful statului a declarat că „decalogul” său, prezentat în publicația Politico chiar în ziua în care și-a anunțat oficial candidatura, a fost „bine primit” de către aliați.
Klaus Iohannis a afirmat că a purtat, deja, discuții cu mai mulți aliați din NATO și „mulți au spus că am venit exact cu temele care sunt foarte importante”. „Au întrebări legate și de alte teme, până acum am avut discuții foarte bune”, a mai spus el.
Klaus Iohannis a evitat, însă, să spună ce state îl susțin în acest demers și a explicat că „despre aceste chestiuni nu se prea fac declarații decât în formatul NATO”.
„Dar vă pot spune că sunt discuții foarte bune”, a dat asigurări președintele.
Punctual, despre contracandidatul său, olandezul Mark Rutte, Klaus Iohannis a spus puține lucruri, punctând faptul că se află într-o „competiție constructivă” cu acesta. ”Ne deosebește geografia, istoria. Sunt unele teme unde abordările noastre sunt ușor diferite în ce privește viitorul NATO”, a menționat Iohannis aspectele care ar face diferența între el și Rutte.
